This makes perfect sense - it fits in well with Apple's iPod/iTMS business model.
I have a ton of eBooks, but i never end up reading a lot of them as I dont like sitting infront of a computer to read them. I was just thinking the other day how i wanted someone to make a stylish, lighweight eBook reader that i could take with me and view in public without looking like an uber dork reading my laptop on the bus etc.
I think Apple may be able to pull this one off. Hopefully the support current formats like .pdf and .chm (also .cbr for comic books) so that i can use my own stuff, as well as some DRM'd apple format for the iTMS content. Much like how we have mp3 and aac support for the audio.
Please apple, something lighweight, long battery life, thin and portable, scratch-resistant, and super high res/high contrast screen (OLED/eInk?).
:)
edit: also magazine support for those macworlds I have in the Zinio reader format would be awesome

Well no luck finding a 16GB AT&T Black in the south jersey area. None of my local stores had any stock :(
Sucks that these companies used the iPad just to get people in the door, even though they knew that many of their stores would not have any to sell.

I don't see how adjusting the UI at the last minute could be any sort of OK. Do you really want developers using the Tiger finder for the next 7 months, and then all of the sudden Apple goes BAM (Emeril Style) and puts in a brand new finder.
a) apple did the exact same thing with OS X. aqua was kept under wraps for a long, long time from the general public and public developers. up until maybe a year before hand we all though OS X was going to look like OS 9.
b) if you work with big software makers you'll know that top tier developers get access to things that aren't made publicly available months and years in advance. the last alpha/beta cycle i participated in started one month after the latest release (and i was on the second invite list).
I want those developers to be able to integrate the finder with their apps. If all Apple is doing is adjusting some colors or icons or something, then we shouldn't be excited about the new finder in the first place. But if Apple is going to do some major revamping, shame on them for keeping it a secret.
People need time to work with it and find all the kinks, especially if it is dramatically different from Tiger
a) see above regarding developers. just because we didn't see it in the keynote doesn't mean that the developers haven't
b) app developers don't really integrate with the finder.
c) tiger represented a big shift in OS X development. apple publicly stated that their APIs, previously a moving target, were basically being locked down. what that means is developers don't have to worry (as much) about under the hood changes. if the file browser dialog changes dramatically between now and next spring developers should theoretically have to do nothing, their function/method calls are just calls.

well considering the CFO of verizon said the unlimited data plans were not a long term solution, yeah it's pretty feasible to think that they won't keep it around forever.

So...are you on VZW? Do you actually have a care in this matter, or is it just another way to rant on others?
AT&T still has people on $30 unlimited because they are grandfathered in. So will VZW, if they actually change the plans.

Battery Exchange Program iBook G4 and PowerBook G4
Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.
The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4.
Apple is voluntarily recalling the affected batteries and has initiated a worldwide exchange program to provide eligible customers with a new replacement battery, free of charge. This program is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities.
Identifying your battery
Please use the chart below to identify the battery model and serial numbers that apply to your iBook or PowerBook. If the first 5 digits of your batterys 12-digit serial number fall within the noted ranges, please order a replacement battery immediately.

Anybody got a alternative method for reaching CorvusCamenarum, such as email, text, etc.? I don't want it, and I'm not asking that it get posted, but if someone has a method for checking if he's ok, I hope you will. Not to be dramatic, but parts of Tuscaloosa were obliterated yesterday around the time of his "last activity" time of 5:00 p.m. Thanks.
Let's hope he/she's okay. A million people in Alabama are without power.

Can anyone think of ways that 3D on an ipad could actually be useful or benefit the user experience and interface, other than being a cool (or potentially annoying) effect for games and movies?
Usually apple doesn't use a technology in one of its devices if it doesn't *do* something to improve the device... I'm blanking on this one.

I use an ancient Handspring Visor to read ebooks and random articles I find online. The notes feature on the iPod is useless to me because it's too small. If Apple makes a decent e-reader for a big-screen iPod, it means one less thing I have to carry around with me on the train.

300-600 mb over the air?
They'd have to change the updates to be actual updates, rather than the "install the entire OS again" approach we have now.

My local BestBuy told me that 'Apple gave them the finger' and they have ZERO iPad 2's in their inventory at all. None.
Some 'special event'...
They offered to 'reserve' one for a $100.00 down payment. Yeah, sure...

I remember reading rumors that there will also be text-to-speech features in the new iPod. If they combine books and this, that'd be awesome.
I don't care about screen real estate, eBook readers or any of that. Give me a 100GB hard drive!

Wow! The battery on my october 2003 iBook completely died ages ago (killed by a faulty power supply), and I haven't been able to justify the cost of a new one. Now I'm getting a new battery free!! Sweet!
In the mean time... unplugging the little sucker. No exploding iBooks in my office! ;)
PS: iBook batteries ZZ338 - ZZ427 are also mentioned on the exchange website, but not in the MR front page story.

I can't deny that I think a lot of people who post here want speed for speed's sake, not because they need it.
I run a HEAVY load of services (Apache, TomCat, MySQL, a lot of cron, etc.) on my machine at all times, iTunes at all times, many terminal sessions, several browsers, BBEdit, CodeWarrior, Excel, Mail, and often have DreamWeaver, Photoshop, Thoth, Flash, and several others open, and I seldom have slowdowns. I don't render anything, and I respect the complaints of people doing heavy rendering.
If you're are noticing slowdowns, max your RAM, and get a RAID card. If you're peaking both processors with 2GB of RAM, and an U160 SCSI, or ATA 133 RAID, complain, otherwise, you don't really have a right to!

Fair thought - but aren't Apple a Global company with a global product? I would have thought anything local wouldn't impact on a worldwide strategy...but then again...
Apple is primarily an American company and they know that the news cycle will be heavy with Election Results. They can wait until next week and get more bang for the same buck. Europe (Australia, Asia, etc. ) will be just as happy with a Nov. 14 release as Nov. 7.

Anyone get the new 'Search' on their 5G ? I have updated iTunes and done the iPod update. Its probably not even a feature I will use much but it's a shame it's not included in the update.
Any luck with the games on a current 5G ? Would be quite nice to have PacMan

To all those cutting military by huge percentages, what are your plans to deal with the millions of unemployed that would produce?
To those opposed to doing drastic cuts.....what do you plan to do to deal with the hundreds of millions affected if the country goes bankrupt?
As for our military.....we are so massively superior to any other nation, it's not like we are going to be at risk even if we do massive cutbacks in military spending.
