No 355 - Sunshine Director - Danny Boyle Sunshine, Sunshine, Sunshine, Sunshine - Bom diddy deedy . I do so enjoy that song. It is groovy cool. But now... to business. It seems that Danny Boyle may be trying to be a modern Stanley Kubrick.... tackling all the genres. Just take a look at his directorial back catalogue: Trainspotting The Beach 28 Days Later Millions Sunshine Slumdog Millionaire There seems to be real diversity in his film ideas - so let us take a look at his Sci- Fi ... Sunshine is an odd film as it seems to be in two parts, and whilst the first half is brilliant and really interesting, the second half is fundamentally flawed. In fact, whilst we're on the subject of the fundamentally flawed, lets begin by looking at the premise of the film. This film is set in a future where the sun is going out so a crew is asked to fire a massive nuclear warhead into the sun and reignite it.... Let us look at some of the key flaws with this simple premise .... (and you can call

Who's the enemy?

The mail from Deccan Mujahideen was traced back to Russia. The terrorists had Mauritian identity cards. Two of the terrorists were British-born. Their ship started from Karachi. They killed a Jewish Rabbi.Lashkar has it's camps in PoK, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. For all you know, every country in this world as I'm writing this, has at least one person who's sitting back in his chair and smiling at the success of these nefariously gruesome attacks. This was not how the world used to be, when I was in school. This was not the India, I thought, I would grow up to live in.

This is my granddaughter, Kayla. Her Mom found her sitting on Wrigley's (their Lab) pillow between the couch and bookcase with a jar of Nutella that she found on the dining room table. Sweet treat. Went to see Two Lovers

Wednesday November 26, 2008. Went to see Two Lovers with Charlotte, Jamie, Laetitia, Siobhan and Timmy (James Gray, 2008). The only good thing about this movie is Gwyneth's hair. Slow like a French movie. She and Joaquin are not to blame.

Happy Tofurkey Day!

We went to the Triangle Vegetarian Society's annual Thanksgiving Day Feast! We ate ourselves sick on vegan cuisine then came home to pass out in front of the fire for awhile. Fun day for all! Except the poor turkeys.... I swiped this image from RedYoda. You can check out his blog here http://kaijuart.com/ Happy Thanksgiving (one day late)

On Break For Just a Bit

I'll be working at the library all day today and tomorrow, and on Sunday company is coming. I'll be cooking a belated Thanksgiving feast for 13 that day, so I won't be blogging for the next couple of days. In the meantime, you might be interested in reading some of my older posts. Here's one about Pippi Longstocking and here is another you might enjoy about a Silly Elephant Symphony . I hope you all have a good weekend, and I'll be back to blogging next week.

Gossip Girl Thanksgiving Fashion Guide

Thanksgiving is the time of the year to spread love and gratitude by getting together with loved ones and pigging out on turkey and potatoes with gravy. With Thanksgiving around the corner, we need to gobble up some thanksgiving fashion with this season's latest looks. For the hippest and hottest Thanksgiving fashion let's consult the hottest TV Series, Gossip Girl, and review the previous episode (The Magnificent Archibalds. Mexican Chicken Soup - Barefoot Bloggers

Image
Barefoot Bloggers is a group that cooks all things Ina . Judy from Judy's Gross Eats chose this recipe. Thanks, Judy... we love having soup often since the cold weather has set in! Chop onions, celery and carrots and saute. Cut up some corn tortillas, a seeded jalapeno and dice some garlic. Add tomatoes, tortillas, garlic, jalapenos and chicken broth. The corn tortillas disappeared into the soup and thickened it to just the right consistency. Serve with sour cream, shredded cheese and broken tortilla chips. I've had chicken tortilla soup in the past and remember not caring for it much, but this was very good and hearty soup, and a recipe I'll make again! You can find Ina's recipe for this Mexican Chicken Soup here .

Marusan Originals Wishbook

Image
In the spirit of the Sears Christmas Wishbook, I've crafted a crappy little Marusan Originals Wishbook page. So if any of my tens of readers comes across these somewhere, I'd love for you to let me know! I've fallen in love with these fun, crude sculpts... they remind me so much of the drugstore toys I used to crave as a kid. No priority here... the numbers and letters are simply for reference. Even if you don't know here to find them, perhaps you can just enjoy the little blurry pics and how many of these there actually are. I swiped the images from the scan of some sort of Japanese catalog.

A Thanksgiving Day Dance Feast

I have not had you out of your chair from behind the computer and dancing for a while, but I'm going to make up for that today. I know today is the day many of you will be dining on turkey and all the trimmings. Like me, you will probably eat a few extra calories that you wouldn't ordinarily consume. No need to worry, though. If you dance along to this blog post, you will burn off those extra calories in no time. I have prepared a complete Thanksgiving dinner day dance feast for you. Before we get started on the feast, though, first we must give thanks. It is much easier to dance if there is music in the air, so let's say thank you for the music. Now, how about a bit of turkey? And, just in case you don't know how to do the turkey trot, here are some youngsters who will show you how. Pass the mashed potatoes, please. May I offer you a Yam? And what would Thanksgiving be without dancing carrots? Might as well finish up with some pie. Would you like apple, peaches

Count Your Blessings--Thanksgiving Week Continues

Bing Crosby starts us off today to remind us to count our blessings. This next song is one I can remember singing in church on Sunday morning as a child. This one is sung by The Statesmen. While you are counting your blessings, listen to Johnny Cash sing a Thanksgiving Prayer on an episode of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.

Green Beans in a Snap

Image
I needed a green vegetable for dinner last night but didn't have any fresh vegetables that weren't planned for Thanksgiving. I didn't want to dip into that stash and have to go to the grocery store again before Thursday! I don't buy many canned vegetables, but I had a can of green beans on hand. I chopped two strips of bacon and fried them up. This bacon was so meaty there wasn't much grease in the pan afterwards. After frying the bacon, I just wiped the pan out and put the bacon back in with some chopped onions. In went one can of green beans (drained) and some freshly ground black pepper. A few minutes on the heat and they were ready to serve! Quick, easy and good!

Corn Pudding

Image
Remember when we picked corn a few months ago? You missed it? Well take a look here ! Corn pudding may be one of my favorite things to eat. Slice the corn from the cob and saute with a little onion in butter... ... whisk together eggs, milk, half-and-half, parsley, salt and pepper. Add the cooled corn mixture and pour into a baking dish. The baking dish then goes into a bain marie , or water bath. Put the baking dish in a larger pan and add hot water to the pan until it's about half-way up the side of the baking dish. This will keep the edges of the custard from cooking much faster than the middle of the casserole. Bake at 375 for 40-45 minutes until the top begins to brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. The corn is so delicious surrounded by a soft, delicate custard that just melts in your mouth. If you like corn and custard, you're going to love this dish! You can find the recipe here !

I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!

No 289 - John Carpenter's The Thing Director - John Carpenter So I had taken out 3 films from the Library and was planning to watch The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford... because i was impressed by the lengthy title. However it skipped and jumped and leapt like a professional ballet dancer. Only with considerably less grace.... I will try and find a different copy of it somewhere and until then I will move down the pile... to The Thing! Now you know a film is going to be good with a title like that. Any film where they can't specify what the threat is is bound to be brilliant. Them !, The Stuff - they evoke that marvellous sense of B Movie nonsense. However, this film is very different from the promises made by the ridiculous title and the pulpy sci- fi title sequence where a spaceship crashes to Earth. After the title sequence, the film focuses less on the Alien. It instead seems to use the appearance of the Alien to explore the paranoia and cabin fev

Thankful For Family and Friends: A Week of Thanksgiving Continues

Like most people, I suppose, I am very grateful for my family and friends. Where would we be, and even, WHOM would we be, if it weren't for our family and friends. We are shaped and molded and helped along by our family and friends from the moment we are born until we die. We laugh together, and we cry together. We face the world together: sharing joys and concerns, solving problems, encouraging one another, lifting one another's spirits, comforting one another, and very simply caring for one another and about each other. The three songs I am posting today are with great gratitude to my family and friends as I continue this week of Thanksgiving. Thank you to those who I have shared so many memories with, thank you to those who have loved me and have allowed me to love them in return, and thank you to all those who have been my friend, whether we have shared only a moment or two or whether we have shared many. This expression of gratitude goes out to those I have met person

Cast of Twilight Movie in December's In Style

Image
Today, the much anticipated Twilight movie premiered here in the Philippines. I can't wait to watch the movie this coming weekend and so I ended up surfing the world wide web for some Twilight goodies. Thanks to Instyle magazine for featuring the most talked-about cast of Twilight movie in their December issue which are probably out in the newsstands today. Here's some of the photos taken during their photo shoot and an excerpt of their interviews. Robert Pattinson "I don’t want to look trendy, so I try to find clothes where somebody wouldn’t be able to say, 'Oh, you’re a cool guy,’" says Pattinson. The actor also admits, "I do like the 'expensive but disheveled' thing if I am going out." Kristen Stewart "I love women’s clothes fashioned after men’s clothes," said Stewart of her Helmut Lang tuxedo jacket and Zac Posen shirt. "You definitely feel more feminine because you look better in the clothes than the guys do!" Rachelle L

Music Monday: A Week of Giving Thanks

Image
This being the week of Thanksgiving, I wanted to start off today keeping the attitude of gratitude in the forefront. With that in mind, here are "Thankful" by Josh Groban and "Gratitude" by Nichole Nordeman. Thankful (lyrics) Somedays we forget To look around us Somedays we can't see The joy that surrounds us So caught up inside ourselves We take when we should give. So for tonight we pray for What we know can be. And on this day we hope for What we still can't see. It's up to us to be the change And even though we all can still do more There's so much to be thankful for. Look beyond ourselves There's so much sorrow It's way too late to say I'll cry tomorrow Each of us must find our truth It's so long overdue So for tonight we pray for What we know can be And every day we hope for What we still can't see It's up to us to be the change And even though we all can still do more There's so much to be thankful for. Even with
